Anti-Racism - with Bernice Hewson
In today's episode, we have the privilege of speaking with the incredible Bernice Hewson, an expert in anti-racism. Bernice is an advocate for dismantling systems of oppression and challenging the status quo within the coaching profession. She believes that in order to truly grow as a coach, we must consider the humanity of those we aim to help, and this includes an honest examination of our own beliefs and biases.
Bernice's research on coaching and whiteness has led her to
run an education and training consultancy focused on raising racial consciousness. Through her work, she helps leaders and coach training providers understand the impact of race and racism in the workplace. She challenges the current coaching competencies that overlook racial identity and power dynamics,
advocating for a more inclusive and introspective approach.
Join Bernice and I as we explore the complexities of anti-racism, the power of advocacy, and the path towards a more inclusive and just society. One of the things that really struck me about Bernice's perspective is her call to let go of guilt and shame. She reminds us that the concept of race isn't something that many of us will have learned specifically about in school, so it's natural to not have all the answers. For me, this is a real key takeaway!
So pop the kettle on, or settle into your lane, and let’s talk anti-racism on this episode of “Speaking of Inclusion..." with our special guest Bernice Hewson.
Additional notes: We refer in the podcast to EVP, and I am grateful to those of you that gave me the feedback that we didn't explain what this means. So... This stands for Employee Value Proposition. It's a term that is used in organisations, usually by recruiters or HR, to sum up all the ways in which that org is positioning itself as an employer of choice. It's the "what's in it for you" bit of their offer. Hope that is helpful!
All feedback is welcome, so if there any other terms of things that don't make sense - let me know and we'll make sure to cover them!
