Welcome along, my aspiring allies, and thank you for joining me on our latest episode of Speaking of Inclusion... the podcast where we explore the challenging topics of inclusion and get confident with putting our foot in it!


Today, I have something special in store for you as I attempt to explain the concept of privilege in 10 minutes or less...

In this episode, I unpack the concept of privilege, exploring what it means, how it manifests, and most importantly, how we can leverage our privilege to drive positive change.

So settle in, in whichever way works best for you, and let's understand privilege on the Speaking of Inclusion... podcast.

Key takeaway number one: Privilege is the often unacknowledged advantage that one group of people has over another group. It's about the absence of inconvenience, something we often don't even realise we possess. Understanding our own privilege helps us recognise the barriers others face.

Key takeaway number two: Privilege is not an accusation or a judgment. It is not about feeling guilty for our advantages or denying the tough times we've encountered. Acknowledging privilege does not make us good or bad people. It simply opens our eyes to the inequities that exist.

 

Key takeaway number three: Privilege is an opportunity to act as an ally. By recognising and reflecting on our privileges, we can actively use them to amplify the voices of marginalised and oppressed groups, dismantle systemic barriers, and create a more inclusive society

Additional notes: We refer in the podcast to EVP, and I am grateful to those of you that gave me the feedback that we didn't explain what this means. So... This stands for Employee Value Proposition. It's a term that is used in organisations, usually by recruiters or HR, to sum up all the ways in which that org is positioning itself as an employer of choice. It's the "what's in it for you" bit of their offer. Hope that is helpful!
